India Implements Ban On 18 OTT Apps Over Vulgar Content Concerns
In a significant move by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, under the central government of India, a total of 18 OTT platforms have been banned from public access. This list includes names such as Uncut Adda, Dreams Films, and Prime Play. The ban extends to 19 websites, 10 apps, and 57 social media accounts linked to these platforms. The reason cited for this drastic measure is the hosting of content deemed 'obscene and vulgar' along with pornographic material, despite previous warnings issued to these platforms.
The legal basis for this ban lies in the prima facie violation of several laws including Sections 67 and 67A of the Information Technology Act, Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Section 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. These sections collectively address the prohibition against transmitting obscene materials electronically, distributing obscene materials, and depicting women in an indecent manner respectively.

The Ministry elaborated on its decision by pointing out that a significant portion of the content on these platforms was not only obscene and vulgar but also portrayed women in a demeaning manner. It highlighted various inappropriate contexts such as relationships between teachers and students, incestuous family relationships, among others. Furthermore, it was noted that the content often included sexual innuendos and in some cases, extended segments of pornographic and sexually explicit scenes which lacked any thematic or societal relevance.
This action by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting underscores the government's stance on maintaining digital content within the bounds of decency and legality. It also reflects an ongoing effort to regulate content on digital platforms that reaches a wide audience across the country.
