Imane Khelif Triumphs With Gold In Boxing At Paris Olympics 2024 Despite Gender Controversy

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif celebrated her gold medal win at the Paris Olympics 2024, viewing it as a strong response to the "attacks" and "bullying" she faced. After winning the women's 66kg final at Roland Garros, she declared, "I am a woman like any other." Khelif had been under intense scrutiny in Paris over the past two weeks.

Following a congratulatory call from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, Khelif told beIN Sports, "I was subjected to bullying and a fierce campaign and this is the greatest response to them." With her gold medal around her neck, she addressed the controversy surrounding her eligibility at a press conference.

Khelif Wins Olympic Gold Amid Controversy

Khelif and Taiwan's Lin Yu-ting were disqualified from last year's world championships due to failing gender eligibility tests. However, they were cleared to compete in Paris, leading to one of the Games' biggest controversies. Lin is set to fight in the 57kg women's final on Saturday.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) took charge of boxing for these Games due to concerns about the International Boxing Association's (IBA) management. The IBA's Kremlin-linked president, Umar Kremlev, claimed that genetic testing showed Khelif and Lin were men.

At the press conference, Khelif stated, "I am fully qualified to take part, I am a woman like any other. I was born a woman, lived a woman and competed as a woman." She added that these attacks made her success even sweeter. "These are enemies of success," she said.

The IOC had cleared both athletes to compete in Paris despite their previous disqualification by the IBA at the 2023 world championships. Khelif expressed confusion over why she was targeted by the IBA: "They hate me and I don't know why," she said. "I sent them a message with this medal."

Khelif's victory not only secured her an Olympic gold but also served as a statement against those who doubted her eligibility and gender identity. Her triumph is seen as a significant moment in addressing gender issues in sports.
