IFFI 2024 Celebrates Cinematic Legends With Screenings Of 7 Restored Classics
The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa is honouring four legendary figures in cinema: Raj Kapoor, Tapan Sinha, Akkineni Nageswara Rao (ANR), and Mohammed Rafi. To celebrate their centenary, the festival is presenting restored versions of their classic films. This allows audiences to enjoy these cinematic gems as they were originally intended.
Among the festival's highlights was the screening of the silent film "Kaliya Mardan," accompanied by a live orchestra. Originally released in 1919 and featuring Mandakini Phalke, this Dada Saheb Phalke film has been digitally restored this year.

The National Film Archives of India (NFAI), under the National Film Heritage Mission (NFHM), has played a crucial role in restoring these films. This initiative, led by India's Information and Broadcasting Ministry, ensures that these cinematic treasures are preserved for future generations.
Several other restored films were showcased at IFFI. These include Raj Kapoor's classic "Awara," Dev Anand's "Hum Dono," Tapan Sinha's "Harmonium," and the Telugu classic "Devadasu" starring Akkineni Nageswara Rao. Additionally, Satyajit Ray's "Seemabaddha" and K. A. Abbas' "Saat Hindustani" were also featured.
This restoration effort by NFDC highlights the importance of preserving India's rich film heritage. By showcasing these films at IFFI, audiences can appreciate the artistry and cultural significance of these works.
