Hansal Mehta Alleges Naga Vamsi's Lucky Baskhar Borrows From Scam Series Amid Industry Tensions

Hansal Mehta, a director, has accused producer Naga Vamsi of taking significant inspiration from his web series "Scam" for the Telugu film "Lucky Baskhar". Mehta described Vamsi as "arrogant". These allegations arose after Vamsi commented in an interview that the Hindi film industry primarily caters to affluent Mumbai areas like Bandra and Juhu, specifically addressing veteran producer Boney Kapoor.

Mehta responded to Vamsi's remarks on X by stating: "Since this person Mr Naga Vamsi was being so arrogant and now that I know who he is: His latest hit as a producer Lucky Bhaskar has borrowed liberally from the Scam series." He expressed satisfaction that the story of a Hindi series like "Scam" was successfully adapted into another language. "Reason I brought this up is that I feel happy that stories travel and a film in another language succeeds in replicating what has worked for us. Everybody wins. Nobody is bigger than the other. That narrative is destructive. Arrogance is even worse," he added in his post.

Mehta Accuses Vamsi of Borrowing from Scam

"Lucky Baskhar", set in the 1990s, tells the story of a lower-middle-class man, played by Dulquer Salmaan, who turns to financial scams due to family struggles and debt. The "Scam" series delves into major financial scandals in India, with its first season focusing on Harshad Mehta's 1992 stock market scam. The second season highlighted Abdul Karim Telgi's involvement in the 2003 stamp paper counterfeiting scandal worth Rs 30,000 crore.

During a roundtable discussion, Vamsi mentioned that "Mumbai didn't sleep" after "Pushpa 2: The Rule" grossed over Rs 80 crore at the box office in one day. Mehta humorously replied on X: "Chill dude whoever you are… I live in Mumbai. Been sleeping really well." Siddharth Anand, director of "Pathaan", also commented on Vamsi's statement, saying: "Mumbai has always been the city that never sleeps ;) It's ok, I guess some people don't know our real Mumbai! (sic)" He further noted his residence history in Bandra and Juhu.

Trade analyst Sumit Kadel criticized Vamsi for allegedly disrespecting Kapoor, stating arrogance leads to downfall. In response to Kadel's comments, Vamsi urged not to draw conclusions from one clip. He clarified: "You don't need to teach us how to respect elders, we respect boney ji more than u guys do and there was no disrespect towards boney ji in that conversation it was a healthy discussion, me and boney ji had a nice laugh and hugged each other after the interview… So please don't come to your conclusions with just what you saw (sic)" he wrote.

The exchange between Mehta and Vamsi highlights ongoing tensions within the Indian film industry regarding originality and respect among filmmakers. While Mehta appreciates cross-cultural storytelling success, he criticizes perceived arrogance. Meanwhile, Vamsi defends his stance by emphasizing mutual respect during discussions with Kapoor.
