Kangana Ranaut's Emergency Film To Release On January 17 Amid Controversy

Actor and filmmaker Kangana Ranaut unveiled the trailer for her eagerly anticipated film "Emergency" on Monday. She described the journey to its release as long and challenging. The film, featuring Ranaut as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, missed its initial release date of September 6, 2024, due to delays in obtaining clearance from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The film faced controversy after Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Akali Dal, accused it of misrepresenting their community.

Ranaut, who also directed and produced the film, expressed her excitement for its upcoming release on January 17. "I'm glad that our film 'Emergency' will finally hit the big screen on 17th January," she stated. This story isn't just about a controversial leader; it delves into themes that remain profoundly relevant today, making the journey both difficult and significant," she added.

The actor-BJP MP from Mandi shared a behind-the-scenes video showcasing her transformation into Indira Gandhi a day before the trailer's release. She described Gandhi as "the most powerful woman in Indian history." Ranaut praised Oscar-winning makeup artist David Malinowski for his work in "Emergency." "With the brilliance of @djmalinowski, Academy Award winner for Prosthetics & Makeup, witness the jaw-dropping transformation that has already garnered widespread praise," she wrote.

"Emergency" explores the period when Indira Gandhi imposed an emergency from 1975 to 1977 and its consequences. As we mark 50 years since the 1975 Emergency, this film isn't just a historical retelling—it's a reflection on the resilience of democracy and a tribute to those who fought to protect it," said producer Umesh KR Bansal.

Bansal further described "Emergency" as a cinematic milestone that challenges audiences to question, engage, and remember the cost of freedom. The film features Anupam Kher as Jayaprakash Narayan, Shreyas Talpade portraying a young Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, Mahima Choudhary as Pupul Jayakar, and the late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram.

Produced by Zee Studios and Manikarnika Films, "Emergency" is set to release just before Republic Day. Ranaut highlighted this timing as perfect for reflecting on India's constitutional resilience with loved ones. The anticipation surrounding this film is high due to its historical significance and star-studded cast.
