Diljit Dosanjh Recites Rahat Indori's Poetry During Controversial Concert Amid Bajrang Dal Protests
At a recent concert in Indore, Punjabi artist Diljit Dosanjh paid tribute to the late Urdu poet Rahat Indori. He recited one of Indori's ghazals, highlighting that Hindustan belongs to everyone. This message was significant amid protests by the Bajrang Dal against his performance. The group objected due to Dosanjh's past comments during the farmers' protests and alleged support for Khalistan, seeking to cancel the event.
Despite opposition from Bajrang Dal, the concert proceeded with notable changes: no meat or alcohol was served. This decision addressed another aspect of the group's protest, which focused on drug and alcohol consumption at such events. Tannu Sharma, a leader from Bajrang Dal, stated, "Our protest was against the consumption of drugs. We are not against this concert. It's not in our culture to consume drugs in these concerts; we are against that. We are also against the consumption of alcohol and there were such stalls in this concert."

The Dil-Luminati India tour concert faced controversy after Bajrang Dal approached Indore police with accusations against Dosanjh. They claimed he made anti-national remarks and supported Khalistan due to his vocal support during farmers' protests. Avinash Kaushal, a Bajrang Dal leader, remarked, "Diljit has made anti-national remarks several times during the farmers' protest. He is also a supporter of Khalistan. We will not allow such a person to hold an event in the city of Maa Ahilya."
The local police took these concerns seriously, focusing on law and order, women's safety, and drug abuse issues. The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of Zone 2 explained their stance: "Indore police consider the matter of law and order situation, women's security and drug abuse seriously. We have not permitted serving alcohol and its consumption in the open here. We are taking everything into cognizance."
Diljit's decision to feature Rahat Indori's poetry was bold given Bajrang Dal's protests backdrop. Indori's ghazal emphasizes unity and shared ownership of Hindustan: "Agar khilaaf hain hone do, Jaan thodi hai. Ye sab dhua hai asmaan thodi hai. sabhi ka khoon hai shaamil yahan ki mitti mein/ kisi ke baap ka Hindustan thodi hai (If they oppose, let them, it's not life at stake. This is just smoke, not the sky at stake. This land has seen sacrifices from everyone/ Hindustan is not anyone's property)." It was a fitting tribute in Indori's hometown.
The Indore concert became more than just music; it highlighted unity and peace amid controversy and protests. The authorities' actions and concert adjustments reflect broader discussions about culture, security, and community values in modern India.
