Dharmendra Faces Legal Summons Over Alleged Cheating In Garam Dharam Dhaba Franchise Investment

A Delhi court has summoned Bollywood icon Dharmendra and two others in a fraud case linked to the Garam Dharam Dhaba franchise. Businessman Sushil Kumar claims he was misled into investing in the venture. Judicial Magistrate Yashdeep Chahal noted evidence suggesting the trio may have conspired to cheat.

Kumar's accusations date back to April 2018, when Dharmendra's associates proposed he invest in a new Garam Dharam Dhaba outlet in Uttar Pradesh. They promised a 7% profit on a Rs 41 lakh investment, leveraging existing outlets' success. Despite paying Rs 17.70 lakh and securing land in Amroha, UP, promises were reportedly unmet. Facing threats and financial loss, Kumar sought a refund instead of continuing with the franchise.

Dharmendra Summoned Over Franchise Investment Fraud

Magistrate Chahal stated that preliminary evidence indicates the accused might have collectively intended to deceive Kumar, fulfilling criteria for cheating charges. The court's December 5 directive requires Dharmendra, whose real name is Dharam Singh Deol, and the other accused to face conspiracy charges under various Indian Penal Code sections related to cheating and criminal intimidation.

"The evidence on record prima facie indicates that the accused persons induced the complainant in furtherance of their common intent and the ingredients of offence of cheating are duly disclosed," remarked the judge. Documents related to the Garam Dharam Dhaba deal, including a letter of intent with the franchise's logo, further implicate Dharmendra and his co-accused.

The hearing is set for February 20, 2025, aiming to explore the allegations further. The court stressed that while detailed examination isn't required at this stage, establishing a base-level case is necessary to proceed. This legal issue arises as Dharmendra celebrates his 89th birthday, overshadowing his festivities with impending legal challenges.

This case highlights franchise investment complexities and due diligence importance, as seen in Kumar's experience with Garam Dharam Dhaba. As legal proceedings continue, they will shed light on business dealings' nuances and potential legal consequences for all involved parties.
