Kalki 2898 AD is directed by Nag Ashwin and is the first motion picture instalment of the planned Kalki Cinematic Universe. Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD, the film will reportedly chronicle some events from the Mahabharata dating back to 3102 BC. In an interaction with Deadline, Nag Ashwin clarified that the movie "does not involve any characters actively worshipped by large numbers of Hindus". He added, "We can take it as extremely religious or we can take it as the story of somebody who was born with a lot of power, didn't know what to do with it, and found his mentor in the process".
