From playing the girl next door to historical characters, and excelling in both romance and action genres, Deepika has left an indelible mark with each role. Currently, she is in the spotlight for her upcoming film Kalki 2898 AD, directed by Nag Ashwin.
Also featuring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Disha Patani, and Kamal Hassan in key roles, Kalki 2898 AD is the inaugural motion picture of the planned Kalki Cinematic Universe. Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD, this sci-fi film will be released in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and English on June 27. Notably, this film marks Deepika's debut in Southern cinema, a milestone she is eagerly anticipating.

Amidst the buzz surrounding Deepika's Telugu debut, she was asked if she would consider future projects in Telugu cinema. During the pre-release event for Kalki 2898 AD, Deepika responded affirmatively, stating, "Sure. If the audience would like me then sure." This film also represents her first collaboration with Prabhas and her third with Amitabh Bachchan after Piku and Aarakshan.
Kalki 2898 AD is expected to depict events from the Mahabharata set in 3102 BC. Director Nag Ashwin clarified in an interview with Deadline that the movie "does not involve any characters actively worshipped by large numbers of Hindus." He elaborated further by saying, "We can take it as extremely religious or we can take it as the story of somebody who was born with a lot of power, didn't know what to do with it, and found his mentor in the process."
