Deepa Mehta To Inaugurate The First-Ever Tasveer Film Festival & Market In Seattle

The 19th Tasveer Film Festival & Market (TFFM) will be held from October 15-20, 2024, in Seattle. This event is a significant milestone for South Asian cinema in North America. It aims to celebrate regional storytelling and introduce the first global film market in North America dedicated to South Asian filmmakers.

Running alongside the market, the Tasveer Film Festival (TFF) will screen 110 films. These include 36 world premieres, 28 North American premieres, and 45 Seattle premieres. The festival features 19 feature films from 15 countries and 91 short films. Notably, 52 of these films are directed by women, trans, and non-binary directors.

Deepa Mehta Opens Tasveer Film Fest

Award-winning filmmaker Deepa Mehta will deliver the inaugural keynote speech at the market. Other notable attendees include director Pan Nalin and representatives from CAA, WME, Blumhouse, NBCU Launch, Amazon MGM Studios, among others. These influential figures aim to foster global connections within the industry.

The Tasveer Film Market (TFM) seeks to transform financial and distribution models for South Asian filmmakers worldwide. Events such as the Co-Production Market, Tasveer Film Fund pitches, industry panels, and networking sessions are planned. The market aims to empower underrepresented filmmakers and amplify South Asian stories globally.

Among the notable films are "All We Imagine as Light" by Payal Kapadia, which won the Cannes Grand Prix; "Wakhri," a social media true story directed by Iram Parveen Bilal; and "Blue Boy," an LGBTQIA+ semi-autobiographical drama by Nik Dodani.

The market will feature curated projects across Narrative, Documentary, and TV categories. These projects seek producing partners, Minimum Guarantee deals, sales, and distribution opportunities. Additionally, the Tasveer Film Fund Short Film Pitches supported by Netflix will be showcased. Finalists will present their projects for a chance to win a $25,000 grant.

Engaging Activities

The festival will also include fireside chats and post-film Q&As with filmmakers. Industry talents will be featured throughout the event. Highlights include the opening night feature "Wakhri" directed by Iram Parveen Bilal; the centerpiece film "The Umesh Chronicles" directed by Puja Kaul; and the closing night feature "A Nice Indian Boy" directed by Roshan Sethi.

This year's Tasveer Film Festival & Market aims to provide a platform for diverse voices in cinema. It seeks to connect South Asian filmmakers with producing partners, distributors, and global platforms.
