Chhaya Kadam Challenges Cinema Casting Norms, Questions Bhansali

Chhaya Kadam Asks Sanjay Leela Bhansali Hard-Hitting Question: Laapataa Ladies' famed actress Chhaya Kadam gained recognition as she walked down the Cannes 2024 red carpet with Payal Kapadia for her movie All We Imagine as Light. The film even won the Grand Prix award. Chhaya, an NSD (National School of Drama) alumna and FTII (Film and Television Institute of India) graduate, expressed her gratitude by saying, "It's a result of everything I did and did not do from the very beginning because I paid my dues." She seems to have a thought-provoking question for Sanjay Leela Bhansali regarding her fame and roles in movies.

The actress asked, "Do you think if Sanjay Leela Bhansali were to make a film on farmers, he'd cast Deepika Padukone as one?" She then laughed while adding, "Conversely, if a casting director is casting for a character with the last name, say, Raheja, I am not sure they'd cast me. I'm not sure even I'd cast me in a role like that." Chhaya continued, "I don't think anyone would think I'd fit right into a role that requires me to strut around in a swimsuit, but if I am to play a character from a chawl that dreams of being in a swimsuit, I'd fit right in." Reflecting on her question, she emphasized, "I know it sounds like a really controversial and difficult question, but this is the truth, and it makes you think."

Discussing her roles further, Chhaya believes that when "you do small roles, you're not respected, you're not paid well, you're treated like animals, which is so heartbreaking." In an interview with The Established, she shared her experiences: "I have done the role of a maid. And that's okay because I needed to do that work at that point. I did some work for the money while some didn't have budgets so I did them only for the joy of acting." She also mentioned her background and appearance by saying she was born in Konkan region; therefore, she can't imagine herself doing a role in bikini but could easily master the role where she is to wear a nauvari saree.

Chhaya's journey has been marked by both challenges and triumphs. Her dedication to her craft has led her to significant milestones such as walking down the Cannes red carpet. Despite facing stereotypes and typecasting in the industry, she continues to pursue roles that resonate with her background and personal experiences.

Her candid reflections on typecasting highlight broader issues within the film industry regarding representation and opportunities for actors from diverse backgrounds. By questioning whether mainstream filmmakers would cast someone like Deepika Padukone in unconventional roles or consider actors like herself for more varied characters, Chhaya brings attention to these critical conversations.

Chhaya's insights shed light on the struggles many actors face when trying to break free from stereotypical roles. Her experiences underscore the importance of diverse representation in cinema and challenge industry norms about casting choices based on appearance or background.

As Chhaya continues to navigate her career with determination and authenticity, her questions serve as a reminder of the need for inclusivity and fairness in casting decisions. Her journey inspires other actors who may face similar challenges while striving for recognition and meaningful roles in the film industry.

Chhaya Kadam's story is one of resilience and passion for acting. Her willingness to address uncomfortable truths about typecasting opens up important discussions about diversity and representation in Bollywood.
