Bidjara Kumari: A Film Exploring Aboriginal And Indian Cultures Announced At IFFI 2024
"Bidjara Kumari," a feature film produced by Anupam Sharma, is set to break new ground. Co-produced with Australian filmmakers Richard Jameson, who also wrote the film, and Jodie Bell, it aims to explore the intersection of Australian Aboriginal and Indian cultures. This announcement aligns with Australia being the focus country at the IFFI's "NFDC Film Bazaar".
The film has received development grants from Screen Australia and Screen Queensland, along with co-production support from India. It will be the first to delve into the cultural connections between these two ancient societies. Anupam Sharma expressed his excitement about this collaboration, stating, "It is an absolute honour to be part of the first film that unites two of the world's oldest cultures to share their modern-day stories. Collaborating with Richard and Jodie on this culturally authentic project is an incredible privilege, and I look forward to bringing this story to life."

The narrative follows Tasha, an Australian girl embarking on a transformative journey through India in search of her father. Her experiences lead her through a series of events that evoke emotional memories tied to her transnational identity and cultural roots. Richard Jameson, both producer and writer, shared his perspective: "This is a story of identity and understanding culture," he said. "Having been raised as a mixed-race kid myself, I know how many Indigenous children struggle with not fitting in. 'Bidjara Kumari' offers an inspiring narrative for kids to begin their own journeys, connecting with their family, community, and culture."
Jodie Bell emphasised the significance of cultural accuracy in storytelling. She stated, "Bringing Tasha's story to the screen alongside Richard and Anu ensures authenticity and cultural safety. It is vital that our stories are told, seen, and heard while representing our cultures truthfully." The team has recently completed a cultural and film location reconnaissance in northern India.
This project promises to offer a unique perspective on cultural identity through its engaging storyline. By highlighting Tasha's journey, it aims to inspire audiences worldwide to reflect on their own cultural connections.
