Barack Obama Reveals His Top Movie Picks For 2024 Including 'All We Imagine As Light'

Barack Obama, the former US president, has shared his list of recommended films for 2024. Among them, Payal Kapadia's "All We Imagine As Light" stands out as a top pick. This Malayalam-Hindi film is Kapadia's debut feature and has garnered significant attention. Obama's tradition of sharing his favourite books, movies, and music began during his presidency and continues today.

The film "All We Imagine As Light" has achieved notable success. It became the first Indian film to win the Grand Prix Award at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The story revolves around two nurses, Prabha and Anu, played by Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha, respectively. They navigate life in Mumbai alongside their friend Parvaty, portrayed by Chhaya Kadam.

Obama's list also includes several other noteworthy films. Ralph Fiennes stars in "Conclave," while Malcolm Washington directs "The Piano Lesson." Mads Mikkelsen appears in the Danish film "Promised Land," and Mohammad Rasoulof directs "The Seed of the Sacred Fig." These selections often spark public interest and discussions.

Denis Villeneuve's highly anticipated "Dune: Part Two" is another highlight on Obama's list. Additionally, "Anora," which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival, features prominently. Sean Wang's coming-of-age movie "Dìdi" and the documentary "Sugarcane" are also included.

"All We Imagine As Light" has received critical acclaim beyond Obama's recommendation. It was named Best International Film by the New York Film Critics Circle and won a similar award at the Gotham Awards. The film is also nominated for Best Motion Picture Non-English Language at the Golden Globe Awards 2025.

The film has further secured a nomination for Best Direction (Motion Picture) for Kapadia at the Golden Globes. It is also in contention for Best Foreign Language Film at the Critics Choice Awards. In India, Rana Daggubati's Spirit Media released it in November.
