AR Rahman And Saira Banu's Divorce: Lawyer Discusses Custody And Reconciliation Possibilities
AR Rahman and Saira Banu, who married in 2005 and have three children—Khatija, Rahima, and Ameen Rahman—have announced their separation. They shared this news through a joint statement earlier this month. The custody of their children is still undecided. Vandana Shah, Saira Banu's divorce lawyer, mentioned on Vicky Lalwani's YouTube channel that the decision about the children's living arrangements has not been finalized. Some of their children are adults and can choose where to live.
The couple's joint statement expressed the difficulty of their decision to part ways after many years together. "After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband Mr AR Rahman. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time," it stated. This message highlighted their enduring affection and the challenges they faced in reaching this conclusion.

Rahman also shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his emotions poetically about their separation. He reflected on their journey ending and seeking meaning amidst heartbreak. "We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter," he wrote.
When asked about a possible reconciliation between Rahman and Banu, Vandana Shah did not rule out the possibility. She expressed optimism by saying, "I have not said that reconciliation is not possible. I am an eternal optimist, and I always talk about love and romance. The joint statement is quite clear. It talks about pain and separation. It's a long marriage and a lot of thought has gone into coming to this decision, but nowhere have I said that reconciliation is not possible." This leaves room for hope that they might reconcile.
On the topic of alimony, Shah chose not to comment but defended Banu by stating she is not focused on money matters. This highlights the complexity of their separation beyond financial issues.
Their separation marks a significant chapter in both lives filled with love and challenges over many years together. While questions remain about child custody and potential reconciliation, both parties seek privacy during this transition. Their situation mirrors what many couples face when deciding to part ways, emphasizing kindness and respect for privacy during such times.
