Amitabh Bachchan Receives Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar, Feels Fortunate
In a prestigious ceremony held in Mumbai on April 24, Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan was bestowed with the Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar, an accolade that commemorates the legacy of the iconic singer Lata Mangeshkar. The award, named after the melody queen who passed away in 2022 due to multiple organ failure, celebrates individuals who have significantly contributed to the nation and society. Bachchan, whose illustrious career spans over five decades, expressed his gratitude and humility upon receiving this honor.
The award ceremony coincides with the memorial day of Deenanath Mangeshkar, a revered figure in theatre and music, and father of the Mangeshkar siblings. Amitabh Bachchan, known for his roles in classics such as "Zanjeer" and "Piku," shared his deep connection with the Mangeshkar family in his acceptance speech. He recounted how Hridyanath Mangeshkar, the youngest of the Mangeshkar siblings, had persistently invited him to accept the award.

During his speech, Bachchan reminisced about his father's admiration for Lata Mangeshkar's voice, likening it to a "stream of honey." He highlighted how her melodious voice connects listeners to a divine presence. The award was presented to Bachchan by Usha Mangeshkar, another esteemed member of the Mangeshkar family, stepping in for Asha Bhosle who was unable to attend due to illness.
The event also honored other luminaries and organizations for their contributions to music, literature, social service, and cinema. Music composer A R Rahman received the Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Puraskar for his contributions to Indian music. Rahman shared his longstanding bond with the Mangeshkar family and expressed how their dedication has been a source of inspiration for him.
Additionally, the Deepstambh Foundation Manobal was recognized for its social service efforts. The play "Galib," produced by Malhar and Vajreshwari under Ashtavinayak Prakashit, was awarded for being the best drama of the year. Marathi writer Manjiri Phadke received accolades for her contribution to literature.
Randeep Hooda was feted with a special award for best film production and acting for "Swatantrya Veer Savarkar," acknowledging both his artistic achievement and the film's connection to the Mangeshkar family. Actor Ashok Saraf was honored for his contributions to cinema and drama, while Padmini Kolhapure received recognition for her work in cinema. Kolhapure, a niece of Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, expressed her gratitude towards her family for their unwavering support.
The ceremony not only celebrated individual achievements but also underscored the enduring legacy of the Mangeshkar family in shaping India's cultural landscape. Singer Roopkumar Rathod, Bhau Torsekar for editorial services, and Atul Parchure for theatre and drama were among other recipients acknowledged for their contributions.
