Mumbai, Feb 26 (PTI) - Netflix has officially announced the premiere date for filmmaker Imtiaz Ali's much-anticipated film "Amar Singh Chamkila". Set to make its debut on April 12, the drama aims to bring to light the untold true story of the legendary Punjabi singer, often hailed as the "Elvis Presley of Punjab". The film stars Punjabi cinema's beloved Diljit Dosanjh as Chamkila and Parineeti Chopra as his wife and singing partner, Amarjot.
The narrative promises to immerse viewers in the colorful and rhythmic essence of Punjab's folk music scene. It will take audiences back to the rustic Akhadaas where Chamkila's powerful voice once captivated many. The streaming giant shared in a press release that the film's music is composed by the acclaimed AR Rahman, with lyrics by Irshad Kamil. Adding a touch of authenticity, both Dosanjh and Chopra have contributed their vocals to some tracks in the movie, which features live music recordings performed on location, including in the Akhadaas.

Produced by Mohit Choudhary alongside Select Media Holdings LLP, Saregama, and Window Seat Films, "Amar Singh Chamkila" explores the life of one of Punjab's finest live stage performers. Chamkila, alongside his wife Amarjot, met a tragic end in 1988, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by many. The film aims to pay tribute to their lives and artistry through a cinematic journey that promises to be as vibrant and soulful as the music they created.
