Abhay Verma Reflects On His Transgender Role In 'Safed', Embraces Challenges

Abhay Verma, known for his role in Munjya, has been hailed as the new National Crush. His performance in the film has garnered significant praise. Munjya has achieved a box office success, amassing around Rs. 80 crore. Prior to this, Abhay appeared in OTT releases like Safed and Ae Watan Mere Watan, where he portrayed a transgender character in the former.

In a recent interaction with Filmibeat, Abhay discussed his initial hesitation about taking on the role of a transgender in Safed. He stated, "Honestly, I can proudly say that I am an example of an actor who can do a Munjya and a Safed. Creators are open to take actors who are taking chances. One of the major reasons I did Safed was because of being skeptical. After reading the script, my mind said no that this should not be the ideal choice, but after a day I contemplated about it, and realised it that though I am saying a no, this is the biggest yes of my life because then you are challenging and exploring yourself."

Abhay Verma on 'Safed' Role

Abhay further elaborated on his experience with Safed, saying, "I really wanted to explore myself in a light where nobody will see me. So, to get the offer to play a transgender and to be able to represent that community, and now, we are in Pride Month, so I can proudly say that I did that character, and I am really proud of it. That's very closest to my heart and that's where I learnt the most. So, after Safed, an actor can do Munjya and that can become a hit. These are the stereotypical things I am making sure that I fight with them and break them."

Directed by Sandeep Singh, Safed featured Meera Chopra alongside Abhay Verma. The movie was released on Zee5 last year.
