Zverev Defeats Ill Ruud To Secure French Open Final Spot

Alexander Zverev secured his second grand slam final appearance by defeating Casper Ruud 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 at the French Open. Ruud, who had benefited from Novak Djokovic's withdrawal in the quarter-finals, initially controlled the baseline rallies and took the first set. However, Zverev capitalised on a long forehand error by Ruud to break serve in the second set's opening game.

From that point, Zverev dominated, winning 92 per cent of points on his first serve to level the match. Ruud's game deteriorated as he informed the umpire of feeling unwell three games into the third set. Despite leaving the court to recover after going down 2-1, Ruud could not regain his form. Zverev broke serve again with a powerful forehand winner in the fourth set's opening game and maintained his lead to advance.

Zverev Wins, Enters French Open Final

Zverev's victory makes him only the second German player in the Open Era to reach the men's singles final at Roland Garros, following Michael Stich in 1996. This achievement underscores Zverev's growing prowess on clay courts this season.

This year, Zverev has shown significant improvement on clay, winning the Italian Open and now reaching his first final at Roland Garros. He joins an elite group of players who have reached both finals in the same year over the past two decades, including Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer.

Upcoming Challenge

Zverev will face Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday's final. The German has a favourable head-to-head record against Alcaraz, having won five of their nine tour-level encounters. This sets up an intriguing contest for the French Open title.
