Stefanos Tsitsipas Wins Round 1 Against Lorenzo Sonego In Dubai Championships First Round

Greek tennis sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas marked his return to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships with a confident win over Italy's Lorenzo Sonego. The match, which concluded at 7-6(4), 6-3 in favor of Tsitsipas, secured his spot in the second round after a five-year hiatus from the event.

Tsitsipas, who has previously made it to the finals in 2019 and 2020, faced a challenging opponent in Sonego but managed to maintain his undefeated record against the Italian, improving it to 4-0.

Tsitsipas Triumphs Against Sonego in Dubai

Tsitsipas, now the World No11, reflected on the match's challenges, especially during the tiebreaker. He admitted to facing difficulties but praised his ability to mount a comeback. "It was not an easy first-round match," Tsitsipas remarked.

"There were a few troubles in the tiebreaker, but it was great towards the end." He attributed his victory to his attacking game and proactive approach, which he felt were crucial in overcoming the tight spots, particularly in the opening set.

In the next stage, Tsitsipas is set to compete against Karen Khachanov, an unseeded player with whom he has a significant history. Having met nine times previously on the Tour, Tsitsipas holds a favorable record against Khachanov and anticipates a competitive match.

Khachanov, who has lived in Dubai since 2016, enters this match hoping to improve his 1-8 record against Tsitsipas after defeating British wildcard Dan Evans. Reflecting on his preparation, Khachanov expressed optimism, stating, "I'm always, let's say, believing in myself; I'm always going out there to fight."

On the other hand, France's Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard emerged victorious in his match against China's Zhizhen Zhang, showcasing his powerful game. Despite facing set-points against him in the second set, Mpetshi Perricard managed to clinch the win through a tiebreaker. His performance, highlighted by a formidable 235kph second serve, set the stage for a possible encounter with top seed Daniil Medvedev, known for his own powerful serve. This potential match-up promises an exciting display of serving prowess.

Earlier, Arab participants Hady Habib of Lebanon and Tunisia's Azi Dougaz competed, though both were unable to advance. Habib, an Olympic athlete, and Dougaz faced tough opponents and were defeated in straight sets. Their participation, however, adds to the diverse representation at the championships.
