Wimbledon 2024 Opening: Sinner, Djokovic, Alcaraz Ready For Battle

Top seed Jannik Sinner is set to start his Wimbledon journey against Yannick Hanfmann. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz will compete against Mark Lajal in the first round. Seven-time winner Novak Djokovic, who has recovered from knee surgery, will face qualifier Vit Kopriva. Djokovic confirmed his participation by giving reporters a thumbs up when asked if he would play.

Andy Murray, a two-time champion, might face Czech Tomas Machac in the first round if he is fit after recent back cyst surgery. The 37-year-old Scot plans to decide at the last minute about his participation. If he plays, it will be his 16th appearance in the men's singles draw at Wimbledon, surpassing Jeremy Bates for the most by any British player in the Open Era.

Wimbledon 2024: Top Seeds' Opening Matches

Djokovic, seeded second, is on the opposite side of the bracket from both Sinner and Alcaraz. This setup means he could potentially meet fourth seed Alexander Zverev later in the tournament. Zverev, who was the runner-up at the French Open, will begin his campaign against Roberto Carballes Baena.

In the women's draw, world number one Iga Swiatek will start her quest for a first Wimbledon title against American Sofia Kenin. Swiatek could face 2018 champion Angelique Kerber in the third round after Kerber received a wild card entry.

Kerber is among four former grand slam champions to receive wild cards into the women's draw. The others are Emma Raducanu, Naomi Osaka, and Caroline Wozniacki. Raducanu will play against 22nd seed Ekaterina Alexandrova after missing last year's tournament due to injury.

Osaka's first-round opponent is France's Diane Parry, while Wozniacki will face Alycia Parks. Second seed Coco Gauff will compete against fellow American Caroline Dolehide in her opening match. World number three Aryna Sabalenka will also face an American opponent, Emina Bektas.

The projected quarter-finals by seeding for the ladies' singles are as follows:

  • Swiatek (1) vs Vondrousova (6)
  • Rybakina (4) vs Pegula (5)
  • Zheng (8) vs Sabalenka (3)
  • Paolini (7) vs Gauff (2)

Murray shares his side of the bracket with Djokovic and Zverev. If Murray competes and progresses far enough, he could face Djokovic or Zverev later in the tournament.

Sinner and Alcaraz are positioned on different sides of the draw from Djokovic. This arrangement ensures they won't meet until potentially deep into the tournament.

The excitement around this year's Wimbledon is palpable with several top players returning from injuries and surgeries. Fans eagerly await to see how these athletes perform on one of tennis's biggest stages.

The inclusion of past champions like Kerber, Raducanu, Osaka, and Wozniacki adds an extra layer of intrigue to this year's competition. Their presence promises thrilling matches right from the start.

This year's Wimbledon promises intense competition with top seeds facing challenging opponents early on. The return of seasoned players adds to the anticipation surrounding this prestigious event.
