Swiatek Sets Off Olympic Quest With Victory Against Begu In Paris
Iga Swiatek began her quest for Olympic gold with a straight-sets win over Irina-Camelia Begu in Paris. The world number one is the favourite to clinch gold at Roland-Garros, having won four French Open titles, including the last three consecutively.
Swiatek and Begu exchanged breaks early in their match on Court Philippe-Chatrier. However, Swiatek maintained pressure on her opponent, securing back-to-back breaks to take the first set from Begu.

The second set proved more challenging for Swiatek. A break in the seventh game had Begu serving to even the score, but Swiatek rallied, breaking back and dropping only one more point to win 6-2, 7-5.
Swiatek will next face either Argentina's Nadia Podoroska or local favourite Diane Parry in the second round. Other notable players on her side of the draw include Danielle Collins, Jessica Pegula, Naomi Osaka, and Angelique Kerber.
On the opposite side of the bracket, Jasmine Paolini advanced with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Ana Bogdan. Paolini has been a runner-up at both the French Open and Wimbledon this year.
Swiatek has now achieved an impressive 22 consecutive wins at Roland-Garros. Her last defeat at this venue was against Maria Sakkari in the 2021 French Open quarter-finals.
In all clay-court tournaments this year, Swiatek has won her last 20 matches. She also secured titles in Madrid and Rome earlier this season.
