Djokovic Marks Successful Return To Wimbledon Following Knee Surgery

Novak Djokovic expressed joy after completing his first Wimbledon test without pain, following a practice match with Daniil Medvedev. The Serbian player had withdrawn from the French Open three weeks ago due to a medial meniscus injury in his right knee. After undergoing knee surgery, his participation in the grass-court major was uncertain.

Despite the doubts, Djokovic has managed to make it to the All England Club. "I can tell you I enjoyed myself really, really much," Djokovic said after playing against Medvedev on Friday. "I can tell you that pain-free tennis is the best tennis. I was pain-free and I'm really glad."

The 37-year-old will face Vit Kopriva, a debutant, in the first round of Wimbledon. Djokovic aims to improve on last year's performance when he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the final. That match was a five-set thriller on Centre Court, marking his fifth consecutive Wimbledon final appearance.

"It's been an intense three weeks after surgery, spending a lot of hours rehabbing," Djokovic added. "I kind of always wanted to give myself a chance to be in London." He acknowledged his surgeon's crucial role in his recovery, stating, "I think my surgeon is here. He's the MVP for sure in the last three weeks."

Daniil Medvedev noted that Djokovic seemed fine during their practice match but acknowledged the challenges ahead. "He seems to be fine," said world number five Medvedev. "You never know what he feels inside of him. It's a five-set match on grass [at Wimbledon], which is never easy for the knee."

Medvedev also mentioned that Djokovic appeared to be moving well despite some moments where he caught him off guard. This observation adds an element of uncertainty about how Djokovic's knee will hold up during actual matches.

Preparation and Recovery

Djokovic highlighted the importance of testing himself against top players like Medvedev before the tournament begins. "It was a great test obviously against one of the best players in the world," he said. "I've played a couple of practice sets but I really wanted to test myself."

The successful practice session has boosted Djokovic's confidence as he prepares for Wimbledon. "The test was very successful so I'm obviously really glad," he remarked.

As Djokovic continues his recovery, he remains focused on taking things one day at a time. "I'm trying to take it day by day and see how far it goes," he concluded.
