Naomi Osaka Secures Victory Against Elise Mertens In Libema Open

Naomi Osaka has moved past her French Open setback to advance to the next round of the Libema Open, defeating Elise Mertens in straight sets. The 26-year-old had previously held match point against eventual winner Iga Swiatek in the second round at Roland-Garros but could not capitalise. However, she put that defeat behind her, winning 6-2, 6-4 in the Netherlands.

Mertens matched Osaka in the early exchanges, but the Japanese player rallied to take control and win the next three games, securing an early advantage. Despite showing signs of frustration in the second set as Mertens threatened to push the match to a deciding set, Osaka remained composed to secure the victory.

Osaka Wins at Libema Open

Osaka will now face either Bernarda Pera or Suzan Lamens in the next round. This match marked Osaka's return to grass courts since 2019. The WTA tweeted about her performance: "Back on grass @naomiosaka takes out the No.4 seed Mertens for a spot in Round 2. Playing in her first match back on grass since 2019." #LibemaOpen

Osaka's victory saw her win 28 of her 31 first-serve points, resulting in a 90 per cent success rate. This win marks her fifth victory over Mertens since their first meeting in Wuhan in 2019. However, this triumph was their first encounter on a grass court.
