Mirra Andreeva Makes History As Youngest Semi-Finalist At Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships
Mirra Andreeva made history by reaching the semi-finals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, becoming the youngest player to do so since the tournament began in 2001. The 17-year-old defeated World No2 Iga Swiatek in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. This victory marked a significant milestone in her career.
Swiatek was considered a strong contender for the title after World No1 Aryna Sabalenka's exit. However, Andreeva's performance ended Swiatek's hopes of winning her first Dubai crown. Andreeva's triumph came less than a day after Sabalenka's departure from the tournament.

Despite initial nerves, Andreeva managed to save three breakpoints in her first service game. She then broke Swiatek's serve twice, showcasing her ability to read and counter Swiatek’s shots effectively. Her powerful forehand played a crucial role in securing these breaks.
In the second set, Swiatek initially led 3-1, but Andreeva remained resilient. After consulting with her coach on court, she won five consecutive games to seal her victory. This win was particularly satisfying for Andreeva as it avenged her previous loss to Swiatek in Cincinnati last year.
Reflecting on her approach, Andreeva said: "Last time we played, [it] was a close match – tough, intense... I just tried to tell myself to go for my shots, to be aggressive, to not hesitate... That helped me to win in a way." She emphasised focusing on playing her best regardless of the scoreline.
Next up for Andreeva is a semi-final match against World No7 Elena Rybakina. Rybakina defeated Sofia Kenin 6-2, 7-6(2) and acknowledged the challenge posed by Andreeva. "For sure, she has nothing to lose now," Rybakina noted about Andreeva’s impressive form.
The other semi-final will feature Clara Tauson against Karolina Muchova. Tauson had earlier defeated World No1 Sabalenka and continued her strong performance by beating Linda Noskova 7-6(4), 6-4. Tauson expressed relief at maintaining her high level of play despite initial doubts.
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is celebrating its 25th edition this year and will conclude on February 22. Following this event, the ATP Tour 500 tournament will commence from February 24 to March 1 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
