Manchester Confirmed To Host Davis Cup Finals Group Stage In September

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has officially confirmed that Manchester's AO Arena will once again be the venue for a group stage of the Davis Cup Finals in September. This announcement follows a historic event last year, which saw a record-breaking attendance of 13,000 spectators. The crowd witnessed Great Britain's team, led by Leon Smith, secure a thrilling victory against France, propelling them into the Final Eight in Malaga. Despite their efforts, the team was eventually defeated by Serbia in the quarter-finals.

With Manchester having been hinted at as a host city since November, this confirmation sets the stage for another exciting chapter of tennis in the city. The challenge now lies in attracting even larger crowds for matches not featuring the GB team. The Lexus GB Davis Cup Team is set to return to action in Manchester this September, as shared by LTA on March 14, 2024.

The draw scheduled for next Tuesday will reveal the three opponents Great Britain will face during the group stage, running from September 10-15. Chris Pollard, LTA director of major events and digital, expressed enthusiasm about bringing the event back to Manchester. He highlighted the significant support from fans last year and the team's success in winning their group. Pollard also emphasized the collaborative efforts with Manchester City Council and Marketing Manchester to elevate this year's Davis Cup experience and introduce the sport to a broader audience.

Great Britain has secured a wild card entry into the group stage alongside Spain. This exemption spares them from participating in last month's qualifiers. Italy and Australia, last year's champions and runners-up respectively, have also bypassed the qualifying rounds. In addition to Manchester, Bologna and Valencia are set to host group stages again, with Zhuhai hosting a group despite China not being among the 16 competing nations.

This year's Davis Cup Finals in Manchester not only promises thrilling tennis action but also represents an opportunity to further engage with and expand the sport's fanbase. With preparations underway and anticipation building, all eyes will be on Manchester come September for another memorable chapter in Davis Cup history.
