Jessica Pegula Secures First Grass-Court Victory At German Open

Jessica Pegula secured her first grass-court title by overcoming Anna Kalinskaya in the German Open final on Sunday. This victory marks Pegula's first title of the year and comes in just her second tournament since returning from a rib injury that sidelined her from the French Open.

Pegula triumphed with a 6-7 (0-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win, showcasing resilience after a challenging start. Kalinskaya initially rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first set to force a tie-break, where she scored seven consecutive points to take the lead. However, Pegula regained her footing in the second set to push the match into a decider.

Pegula Wins Grass-Court Title

In the final set, Pegula faced another uphill battle as she found herself trailing 4-1. Demonstrating determination, she won the last five points of the match, sealing her victory after two hours and 38 minutes on court. This win also marked Pegula's first Top 10 victory of the year.

The world number five saved five championship points before defeating Kalinskaya. This victory in Berlin is Pegula's fifth career title on the Hologic WTA Tour and her first since winning in Seoul in 2023. The match against Kalinskaya was their second encounter, with Pegula also winning their previous meeting at the 2019 Citi Open in three sets.

Pegula began her day by completing a suspended semi-final against Coco Gauff. She edged past Gauff with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-2) win to reach her first-ever grass-court final. This semi-final victory was crucial as it set the stage for her eventual triumph over Kalinskaya.
