Holger Rune Falls To Jordan Thompson In Queen's Club First Round

A challenging period for Holger Rune persisted as the Danish player was defeated by Jordan Thompson in the first round of the Queen's Club Championships on Monday. Rune, who has dropped from a high of fourth to fifteenth in the ATP rankings, failed to maintain his lead against Thompson in London. The Australian emerged victorious with a scoreline of 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 in an engaging match against the seventh seed.

Rune had previously reached the semi-finals at Queen's and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon last year. However, he now faces a significant loss of momentum as the third Grand Slam of 2024 approaches. Thompson's victory marked the end of his five-match losing streak, achieved in a commendable manner.

Rune Defeated at Queen's Club

In other matches at the ATP 500 event, third seed Grigor Dimitrov advanced comfortably by defeating Adrian Mannarino 6-1, 6-2 in just 63 minutes. Dimitrov will next face either Sebastian Korda or Karen Khachanov in the last 16. Top seed and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz is set to begin his campaign against Argentine Francisco Cerundolo on Tuesday.

Additionally, Thompson's compatriot and last year's runner-up Alex de Minaur will start his tournament on Tuesday with a potentially challenging match against Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

In their first career meeting, both Rune and Thompson displayed strong serving skills. The three sets featured only two breaks—one from each player—in a contest that lasted over two hours. Thompson entered the tournament on a five-match losing streak but has shown proficiency on grass, securing his 64th career win on this surface.

Thompson recorded eight aces and only one double fault while winning 69 per cent (20/29) of his second-serve points, allowing Rune just one break-point opportunity throughout the match. He added 27 winners and could potentially face home favourite Andy Murray in the next round if Murray defeats Alexei Popyrin.

Dimitrov, who made it to the quarter-finals at the French Open, registered 28 winners and only five unforced errors in his dominant win over Mannarino. The Bulgarian appears to be in strong form heading into Wimbledon.
