Wimbledon Shocker: Fognini Outclasses Ruud In Second-Round Masterclass
Casper Ruud faced an unexpected defeat in the second round of Wimbledon, marking another early exit for a seeded player at the grass-court major. The eighth seed was outplayed on No.2 Court by Fabio Fognini, who secured a 6-4, 7-5, 6-7 (1-7), 6-3 victory, sending Ruud packing from the All England Club.
World number 94 Fognini maintained composure throughout the match, skillfully controlling play from the baseline and frequently outmaneuvering Ruud. This win propelled Fognini to his seventh third-round appearance in 14 attempts at Wimbledon. He is set to face Robert Bautista Agut next, following the Spaniard's victory over Lorenzo Sonego on the same day.

"Maybe 14 is the lucky one," Fognini remarked during his on-court interview. "I was 5-2 up and the match was almost done but then at 5-4 too many things were coming into my head. But this is why I love and hate this sport. In the end he's top 10 and I'm 37 and today was a good present for me."
Forza, Fabio 💪

Ruud's early departure follows that of sixth seed Andrey Rublev, who also exited unexpectedly. Meanwhile, Tommy Paul narrowly avoided a similar fate on No.3 Court. The American, seeded twelfth, advanced to the third round by overcoming Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen with scores of 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, and 6-4. Paul's next challenge will be against Alexander Bublik.
Age Proves No Barrier for Fognini
At age 37 years and 40 days, Fognini became only the third player aged 37 or older to defeat an ATP top-10 player in a men's singles major event. He joins Ken Rosewall and Roger Federer in achieving this milestone as Ruud's difficulties on grass persist.
This year's Wimbledon has already seen several surprising outcomes with top seeds falling earlier than expected. Fans are eagerly watching to see how these unexpected results will shape the tournament moving forward.
