Emma Raducanu Fights Off Jet Lag For Victory At Washington Open

Emma Raducanu faced a tough challenge against Elise Mertens in the first round of the Washington Open. Battling jet lag, she managed to secure a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 victory. This match marked her return since her last 16 exit at Wimbledon.

Raducanu chose to skip the Olympics to concentrate on her hard-court game and prepare for the US Open, which she won in 2021. Her Washington campaign began with a stern test against Mertens, extending well past 11 pm local time.

Raducanu Wins Despite Jet Lag

Raducanu admitted that dealing with jet lag was challenging. "I was playing some pretty good tennis in patches throughout, especially in the first set and moments in the third set," she said. "I lost some focus in the second. It's not easy playing at 11:30."

Arriving on Thursday night, Raducanu was still adjusting to the time difference. She shared her thoughts during the match: "I was telling myself, 'I'm not leaving. This is not happening. You're not losing this match.'"

Despite feeling jet-lagged, Raducanu remained determined. "I've been training and playing so good in practice. I've been really on it," she noted. On court, she reminded herself of her hard work: "You've been so focused for so long. There's no way you're not going to try right now."

She expressed satisfaction with her performance despite needing to improve focus: "I'm happy with how I pulled myself out of it, but I do need to focus."

The match's intensity was evident as it stretched late into the night. The official Twitter account of Mubadala Citi DC Open highlighted Raducanu's victory:

Raducanu's decision to focus on hard-court preparation instead of participating in the Olympics seems to be paying off as she advances further into the tournament.

Her next matches will likely test her endurance and adaptability further as she continues to adjust from jet lag and build momentum for upcoming competitions.

The Washington Open serves as an important stepping stone for Raducanu as she aims to regain top form ahead of the US Open later this year.

Her resilience and determination are clear indicators that she's ready to fight through challenges and perform at her best on the court.

Raducanu's journey continues as she progresses through the tournament, showcasing her skills and mental toughness despite facing initial hurdles like jet lag and late-night matches.
