Furthermore, another highlight match pairs Tunisian star Ons Jabeur against American newcomer Peyton Stearns, showcasing the depth of talent in the tournament. The ceremony on Saturday confirmed these pairings, setting the stage for a week filled with top-tier women's tennis action. Impressively, the tournament will feature 36 of the top 40 players globally, demonstrating its prestige within the tennis community.

Raducanu Faces Sakkari in Dubai Debut

Scheduled just before the men's event, the women's competition, taking place from February 16 to 22, precedes the 33rd edition of the ATP Tour 500 tournament set for February 24 to March 1. Held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships continues to attract tennis enthusiasts globally.

Emma Raducanu, benefitting from a wildcard entry, is set to make her first appearance in Dubai. She enters the competition with a history of success against Sakkari, including a notable victory at the 2021 US Open semi-final, which propelled her to her first Grand Slam title. Raducanu also bested Sakkari in straight sets at Wimbledon last year, reaching the last 16. Her participation adds a layer of anticipation for fans eager to see if she can continue her winning streak against Sakkari.

The event, running from February 16-22 at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, is not just a landmark anniversary but also a gathering of tennis elites. The lineup includes nine of the top ten players, along with 17 of the top 20, featuring names like Aryna Sabalenka, the World No1, Iga Swiatek, a five-time Grand Slam victor, and Jasmine Paolini, the defending champion. Notably, the top eight seeds have all been granted byes into the second round, emphasizing the competitive nature of the tournament.

"This year marks the 25th edition of the women's tournament, which has permanent 1000 status. The competition has grown significantly alongside the men's ATP 500 event, which celebrates its 33rd anniversary next week," stated Ramesh Cidambi, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free and Chairman of the Tournament's Organising Committee.

He further mentioned, "As always, the WTA week draws the world's top female athletes, and this year is no different. We look forward to welcoming back, among others, World No1 Aryna Sabalenka, five-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek and reigning champion Jasmine Paolini, who reached the French Open and Wimbledon finals before winning Olympics doubles gold in a breakout 2024."

Anna Kalinskaya, last year's finalist now ranked World No18, and Sorana Cirstea, a Dubai resident and two-time WTA Tour singles champion, were present during the draw. Kalinskaya, in particular, reminisced about her incredible run last year and expressed her eagerness to compete again. "I'm very excited to be back. I have so many good memories from last year's amazing matches, so I'm really looking forward to playing in front of this crowd. Hopefully, I can put on a great performance and deliver some exciting matches," she shared.

Cirstea, who has seen her rankings rise recently, highlighted her connection to Dubai. "I don't know if many people know, but I live in Dubai. I have residency here, so this is my home. This feels like a home tournament, and again, I'm very, very grateful for receiving the wildcard. I'm very excited to be back. I know the field is extremely tough, but I hope I can have a good week and show my best," she said, adding, "This is my ninth appearance here. The first time I came, I was 17 years old, and I can see all the improvements the tournament has made. In my eyes, it's one of the best tournaments on [the WTA] Tour."

The draw, led by WTA Supervisor Donna Kelso, included key figures such as Salah Tahlak, Tournament Director and Deputy Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free; Nasser Yousef Al-Marzouqi, Secretary General of the UAE Tennis Federation; and Sinead El Sibai, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Dubai Duty Free.
