Djokovic Hails Popyrin Win As Season's Best Tennis At Wimbledon

Novak Djokovic described his fourth-set tie-break against Alexei Popyrin as his best of the year after securing a victory at Wimbledon. Djokovic, who came from behind to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), advanced to the last 16 and will face Holger Rune next.

The world number two maintained his unbeaten record against Popyrin in their third encounter, having previously defeated him at the Australian Open earlier this year. Djokovic praised Popyrin for his strong performance and acknowledged that the tie-break in the fourth set showcased his highest level of play this year.

Djokovic's Best 2024 Tennis at Wimbledon

"It was another tough match. I didn't expect anything less than what we experienced on the court today from Alexei," Djokovic said. "I knew he was going to come to the match with confidence, a lot of self-belief."

Djokovic noted that Popyrin's serve and powerful forehand made him a formidable opponent on any surface. Reflecting on their previous match in Australia, Djokovic recognised Popyrin's potential to win. "He was close to winning [when we played] in Australia earlier this year," he added.

The Serbian player admitted that Popyrin was superior in the first set but felt he performed well in the second and third sets. The fourth set, according to Djokovic, was highly competitive. "He was serving very well. It was very difficult to read his serve," he said.

Mental Toughness and Concentration

Djokovic emphasised the mental challenge of staying focused throughout the match. "It was just a very challenging match, mentally as well, to hang in there," he explained. "I'm not allowed to have big concentration lapses."

He expressed satisfaction with his performance in the tie-break, stating, "I think I've done well in that regard in one of the best tie-breaks I've played this year, that's for sure."

Historical Achievement

Despite not being at his best in the first set, Djokovic demonstrated resilience reminiscent of his career-long tenacity. He became only the third player in the Open Era to achieve 50 Grand Slam match wins after turning 35, joining Ken Rosewall (64) and Roger Federer (62).

The Centre Court crowd reacted enthusiastically when England won their penalties at EURO 2024 during Djokovic's match. This moment added an extra layer of excitement for both players and spectators.

As Djokovic prepares for his next match against Holger Rune, he continues to show why he remains a dominant force in tennis. His ability to overcome challenges and maintain focus is a testament to his enduring skill and determination.
