Carlos Alcaraz Secures Victory In Wimbledon Title Defence Opener
Carlos Alcaraz began his Wimbledon title defence with a victory over qualifier Mark Lajal. The Spaniard, who opened the 2024 tournament on Centre Court, overcame early breaks in each of the first two sets to win 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 6-2. In the third set, Alcaraz was more dominant, not allowing Lajal any break-point opportunities.
Alcaraz, who recently won the French Open, aims to become the youngest player in the Open Era to win both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. He will face either Aleksandar Vukic or Sebastian Ofner in the second round. Despite his loss, Estonian qualifier Lajal can be proud of his performance on such a significant stage.

Monday saw eighth seed Casper Ruud and 10th seed Grigor Dimitrov advance comfortably with straight-sets wins over Alex Bolt and Dusan Lajovic respectively. Denis Shapovalov also progressed by defeating 19th seed Nicolas Jarry 6-1 7-5 6-4. Frances Tiafoe narrowly avoided an upset by coming back from two sets down to beat Matteo Arnaldi in five sets, setting up a second-round match against Borna Coric.
Brandon Nakashima added to American success with a straight-sets victory over 18th seed Sebastian Baez. Nakashima won 6-2 6-3 6-4 and will next face Australian Jordan Thompson. This series of matches highlighted strong performances from several seeded players as they moved forward in the tournament.
Alcaraz did not have ideal preparation for Wimbledon after losing to Jack Draper in the last 16 at Queen's Club. However, he managed to secure two hours and 23 minutes of competitive play against Lajal without his progress ever seeming uncertain. Alcaraz hit 44 winners and lost only nine of the 56 points played on his first serve.
The Spaniard also excelled at the net, winning 26 out of his 33 points there, ensuring a smooth start to his campaign. Alcaraz has now joined an elite group as just the seventh player in the Open Era to win all of his first 14 first-round matches in grand slam tournaments.
