Andy Murray Hailed As A Tennis Great Alongside Djokovic, Nadal, Federer

Mark Philippoussis believes Andy Murray deserves to be ranked alongside Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer as he nears the end of his career. On Tuesday, Murray announced he would not participate in what was expected to be his final singles match at Wimbledon due to incomplete recovery from back surgery. He will instead compete in doubles with his brother Jamie.

Despite having fewer grand slam titles than Djokovic (24), Nadal (22), and Federer (20), Philippoussis considers Murray one of the greats. The 2003 Wimbledon runner-up said, "Andy Murray is a great person first of all, I have known him since we were a very young age, I know the family too." He added that being a multiple major champion during their era makes Murray exceptional.

Philippoussis continued, "He has an amazing career and people say the top three; they say, Djokovic, Nadal and Federer but I always have him in the top four because I think he was the one who pushed those guys to the limits." He expressed his wishes for Murray's future both professionally and personally.

The last few years have been challenging for Murray due to injuries. The Scot underwent two hip surgeries in 2018 and 2019. Alexander Bublik, who has won two out of five matches against Murray, commented on his struggles. "I honestly don't know what to say because he's been struggling and it's painful to see but he enjoys the struggle," Bublik said.

Philippoussis hopes that even after retiring from professional tennis, Murray will remain involved in some capacity. He remarked, "What he's brought to the table has been incredible. At the time when you had literally three guys dominating, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic." Philippoussis highlighted Murray's achievements including being a world number one, a gold medallist, and a Davis Cup champion.

He added that although Murray might not have as many grand slam titles as the other three players, his accomplishments during their dominance are impressive. "To have done all that when they were dominating the sport is incredibly impressive," said Philippoussis.

Bublik also reflected on how difficult it is for younger players who saw Murray win big titles to now see him struggle with injuries. "The guy is killing himself and he's in pain," Bublik noted. He acknowledged how tough it must be for someone who was once number one in the world and won three slams.

Murray's Legacy

Philippoussis expressed pride in seeing Murray still active in tennis despite his challenges. "It will be sad to see him not at Wimbledon and I hope we'll get a chance to see him one more time," he said. He emphasized that everyone loves Andy Murray and hopes he continues to stay around because of his passion for the game.
