Andy Murray Falls To Marcos Giron In Straight Sets At BOSS Open

Andy Murray experienced his third consecutive first-round exit, losing in straight sets to Marcos Giron at the BOSS Open. The three-time major champion was defeated 6-3, 6-4 in Stuttgart, marking his seventh first-round loss this season. The match lasted 75 minutes, with Giron securing victory.

Giron, who was the runner-up to Tommy Paul in Dallas in February, broke Murray's serve in the sixth game of the first set. He won nine out of ten points to take the opening set. Murray, a Stuttgart finalist in 2022, attempted a comeback by winning eight of the first nine points in the second set.

However, Murray missed two break points as Giron held his serve and then broke Murray's serve in the third game. This break proved crucial for Giron, who clinched victory with a love hold, setting up a last-16 match against Jack Draper.

Giron hit seven aces and won 80 per cent (33 out of 41) of his first-serve points. This victory marked his first ATP win over a current or former world number one. The match was the 999th singles contest of Murray's career and resulted in his 11th defeat of 2024.

Implications for Rankings

Murray has not won a completed match since defeating Tomas Etcheverry at the Miami Open. As a result, the 37-year-old is set to drop out of the world's top 100 next week for the first time since January 2022.
