UAE Media Council Introduces Advertiser Permit For Digital Content Regulation
In a significant move towards regulating the digital advertising landscape, the UAE has introduced the Advertiser Permit for individuals promoting content on social media, regardless of whether they receive payment for it. The Secretary-General of the UAE Media Council, Mohammed Saeed Al Shehhi, highlighted the permit as a key development in enhancing the regulatory framework for digital advertising. Maitha Majed Al Suwaidi, CEO of Strategy and Media Policy Sector at the UAE Media Council, elaborated on the Advertiser Permit as a measure to empower content creators and enhance digital advertisement quality. Set to be mandatory in three months, it gives creators ample time to adjust and comply. This initiative also includes a grace period where the permit will be issued free for the first three years, and existing permits will remain valid until the expiration.

Notably, certain exemptions apply to the Advertiser Permit requirement. Individuals promoting their products or services through personal accounts and those under 18 participating in educational, athletic, cultural, or awareness activities, in line with age-related legislation, are not obliged to obtain the permit.
The framework establishes stringent guidelines for permit holders, including the necessity to display the permit number on social media platforms and restricting advertisements to registered accounts. Moreover, it mandates obtaining approval from relevant authorities for certain advertisements, emphasizing the commitment to uphold media content standards.
The introduction of the Visitor Advertiser Permit for content creators visiting the UAE further reflects this commitment. It requires registration through licensed agencies, with the permit being valid for three months and renewable for another three.
