Maktoum Bin Mohammed Chairs Federal Tax Authority Meeting To Review Enhancements In UAE Tax System
H.H. Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, First Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Chairman of the Federal Tax Authority (FTA), led the recent FTA Board meeting. The session focused on reviewing development projects to enhance the UAE's tax system, aligning it with global standards and improving taxpayer services.
The meeting highlighted the success of corporate tax implementation, with compliance rates among the highest worldwide. By September's end, over 651,000 entities registered for corporate tax. This achievement is attributed to efficient procedures via the ‘EmaraTax’ platform, which processes numerous requests daily. The call centre also provides timely support during peak times.
Sheikh Maktoum instructed the FTA team to continue modernising efforts, focusing on digital transformation strategies that enhance customer experience and operational efficiency. This approach aims to achieve global service excellence benchmarks.
The Board approved the FTA's proposed budget for 2026 and endorsed several executive resolutions regarding administrative policies and core activities. Updates on the E-Invoicing Project were reviewed, highlighting legislative and digital system advancements made so far.
The FTA has conducted extensive awareness campaigns across all emirates and digital channels. These initiatives aim to provide businesses with clear guidance to improve tax awareness and ensure accurate voluntary compliance.
Operational Achievements and Future Plans
A report presented at the meeting detailed recent achievements, including approving new VAT refund applications for UAE citizens building new homes, totalling AED115.4 million in August and September. The number of VAT registrants reached 547,000, excise tax registrants totalled 1,777, while registered tax agents numbered 806.
The Board also approved a new mechanism for calculating excise tax on sweetened drinks using a tiered volumetric model linked to sugar content. Steps taken by the FTA to prepare for this mechanism include developing electronic systems and proactive awareness initiatives.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
Sheikh Maktoum emphasised sustaining achievements and strengthening the FTA's role in advancing sustainable development in the UAE. He stressed enhancing FTA services in line with government digital strategies to improve operational efficiency.
The seamless processing of corporate tax returns during peak periods underscores the effectiveness of the legislative framework aligned with international best practices. The FTA continues implementing enhancements under its ‘Zero Digital Bureaucracy’ programme to streamline procedures further.
