Understanding the FIFA World Ranking

The FIFA World Ranking is a system used to evaluate and rank national football teams globally. Managed by FIFA, the sport's governing body, teams are ranked based on their match performances. This system was introduced in December 1992. The initial rankings featured top teams such as Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain. Notably, Brazil has maintained the number one spot for the longest duration and currently holds this position as the five-time World Cup champions.

FIFA World Ranking Procedure

The ranking system employs a points-based method for all FIFA-recognized international matches. Over time, several adjustments have been made to address concerns that previous methodologies did not accurately represent the teams' relative strengths. Since August 16, 2018, the system has adopted the Elo rating method from chess. This updated model, approved by the FIFA Council in 2018, involves adding or subtracting points based on match outcomes, moving away from the previous approach of averaging points over a given period. This new version is known as SUM.

Purpose and Use of FIFA Rankings

The FIFA World Rankings serve as an important tool for evaluating and comparing the performance and skill levels of national A-teams. These rankings are crucial for tournament seedings and assessing team development. Covering 211 FIFA member teams, the rankings are calculated based on the number of games won and the significance of those victories, particularly in major tournaments or against strong opponents. Importantly, the rankings do not guarantee automatic World Cup qualification. Each confederation has a limited number of World Cup slots, and team rankings are used for seeding in regional qualifiers. This approach allows lower-ranked teams to qualify based on their performance in these events, promoting a diverse and competitive tournament environment.
