ECAE Rolls Out Literacy Initiatives For Reading Month 2024 In UAE

The Emirates College for Advanced Education (ECAE) has taken a significant step towards fostering a culture of reading and literacy in the UAE. Commemorating Reading Month 2024, ECAE rolled out a series of enriching reading activities and workshops, aligning with the UAE's National Literacy Strategy. This initiative underscores the importance of reading as an essential skill for education, personal growth, and a pillar of the UAE's knowledge-based economy.

Targeting a broad audience, including school students and educators, ECAE's efforts have initiated meaningful conversations on how reading contributes to creativity, learning enhancement, personal development, and skill acquisition.

Dr. May Laith Al Taee, Vice Chancellor of ECAE, highlighted the UAE leadership's dedication to cultivating a strong reading culture. "The emphasis on reading is fundamental for fostering a nation of readers and establishing a lifelong learning culture. It's about making reading a core part of our cultural identity," Dr. Al Taee stated. Through its reading programs, ECAE aims to nurture reading habits among students, educators, and the community at large, contributing to cognitive and cultural growth.

Engaging Reading Initiatives

One of the highlights of ECAE's Reading Month activities was the ILearn programme session titled "How fit for purpose are schools and classrooms as sites for contemporary learning?". Led by Professor David Pedder, Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic at ECAE, the session delved into the role of classrooms in supporting learning and teaching, exploring restructuring needs to meet student requirements.

Furthermore, ECAE's ongoing iRead initiative featured a series of sessions aimed at kindling a love for reading. The "Read and Reflect" workshop, facilitated by Dr. Farah ElZein, Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling, Special Education, and Neuroscience, involved students from GEMS Winchester Abu Dhabi School in reflective discussions on their reading experiences. Another session, "Tale Talk - I Can", encouraged inclusivity and collective learning through storytelling among students from diverse backgrounds.

The "Inspiring Words" session was particularly notable, with 17-year-old Amna Muhammad Al Mansouri, the Arab Reading Challenge Championship state-level winner, sharing her journey with second graders at Al Asayel School. Additionally, renowned author Hessa Al Muhairi, who won the Sheikh Zayed Book Award for Children's Literature in 2018, engaged seventh-grade students from Yas School with her book "The Dinoraf", highlighting the transformative impact of literature.

ECAE's Reading Month activities reflect a comprehensive effort to promote reading as a lifelong habit, emphasizing its significance in fostering innovation, creativity, and a robust culture of learning. Through such initiatives, ECAE aims to contribute significantly to the UAE's vision of establishing a knowledge-based economy, cementing reading as a crucial component of the nation's cultural and cognitive development.
