Sheikh Sultan Opens SICAL Conference At American University Of Sharjah

His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, a member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the Sharjah International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Linguistics (SICAL) 2024 at the American University of Sharjah (AUS). Upon his arrival, he was welcomed by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, President of AUS, along with several officials and diplomatic representatives.

In his keynote address, His Highness described the conference as a long-awaited milestone. He emphasised the importance of aligning linguistic research with technological advancements in today's world. Highlighting challenges in artificial intelligence, he stated: "The world of artificial intelligence is vast and filled with limitless possibilities. We face numerous challenges daily, as scientific breakthroughs occur almost every hour, thanks to major advancements in artificial intelligence research."

Sheikh Sultan discussed Sharjah’s initiatives in supporting artificial intelligence for language services. He remarked: "We have opened our hearts, minds and institutions here in Sharjah, the city of knowledge and culture, to explore the relationship between artificial intelligence and languages." He highlighted efforts to facilitate computational research in Arabic.

The completion of the Historic Dictionary of the Arabic Language was another significant achievement mentioned by Sheikh Sultan.: "By the grace of God, we in Sharjah... have recently completed the Historic Dictionary of the Arabic Language, comprising 127 volumes." This monumental work required extensive effort and resources.

H.H. also spoke about integrating artificial intelligence into lexicography: "We are now entering the field of lexicographical development through artificial intelligence." The Historic Dictionary will be available for computational studies to spread knowledge globally.

He urged students to integrate science with computational development while maintaining ethical standards: "I urge all students... to strive in bridging linguistic studies with computational research." He encouraged contributions that align with ethical values.

Conference Themes and Goals

The conference aims to explore ethical challenges and innovative prospects in AI, linguistics, and culture. It features over 50 speakers and 1,000 participants across more than 20 workshops. The event seeks collaboration among technology leaders to develop advanced AI technologies that are ethically grounded.

Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi highlighted key topics at the conference: "Today, we are here to discuss an issue of utmost importance... artificial intelligence, its uses and its deep impact on language and cultural identity." She stressed that preserving language is a shared responsibility among society.

AUS Initiatives in Arabic Studies

AUS has established a Center for Arab Studies and Islamic Civilizations to harness AI in Arabic studies. These initiatives reaffirm Sharjah's commitment to preserving language while adapting it to modern technologies.

The conference is organised with Emirates Scholar Center for Research and Studies. It provides a platform for exchanging ideas on responsible AI development in linguistics with strong ethical foundations.

The event concluded with a film showcasing key conference topics aimed at enhancing research through AI. The gathering underscores Sharjah's dedication to advancing responsible AI applications globally.
