SDAIA Leverages AI Technology To Elevate Arabic Language Locally And Globally

The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) is leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance the Arabic language's global standing. This initiative aligns with Saudi Vision 2030, aiming to strengthen the Kingdom's leadership in promoting Arabic on various levels. Recently, SDAIA was honoured with the 2024 King Salman Global Academy Award for Arabic Language in the Institutions category, recognising its significant contributions.

SDAIA has developed large-scale language models within Saudi Arabia to meet national generative AI needs. These models are trained on comprehensive datasets tailored for Arabic language and cultural requirements. By establishing a robust infrastructure locally, SDAIA ensures technological sovereignty while advancing these models.

One of SDAIA’s key initiatives is the "Balsam" Index, launched in collaboration with the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language (KSGAAL). This index evaluates and benchmarks Arabic language models in data and AI fields. It was introduced at the third Global AI Summit held in Riyadh from September 10 to 12.

The "Balsam" Index is part of efforts by SDAIA and its partners to advance rapidly evolving Arabic language models. This initiative helps assess new models under continuous development, incorporating advanced features and capabilities. Additionally, SDAIA collaborated with KSGAAL to compile a glossary of data and AI terms in both Arabic and English.

Among SDAIA's notable AI products is the ALLaM model, a pioneering Saudi-developed system designed to answer questions across various knowledge domains in Arabic. Developed at the National Center for AI by national experts, ALLaM stands out as a prominent linguistic model focusing on generative AI for the Arabic language.

Building Comprehensive Datasets

Over 400 specialists and 160 government agencies contributed to creating the world's largest Arabic dataset, comprising over 500 billion text units, to develop ALLaM. This extensive collaboration highlights SDAIA's commitment to supporting and preserving the Arabic language globally through advanced AI technologies.

SDAIA also publishes reports and studies aimed at enriching Arabic content with AI concepts and applications. These efforts are intended to raise community awareness about AI's role in developing various sectors. The authority’s dedication underscores its commitment to spreading the Arabic language worldwide through innovative technology solutions.
