RIT Dubai To Launch Innovative Bachelor Of Fine Arts In New Media Design
Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) Dubai has unveiled an innovative undergraduate degree program focusing on new media design, which is set to equip students with skills for the evolving digital communication landscapes. The Bachelor of Fine Arts in New Media Design aims at molding talents in the fields of interactive design, mobile applications, and more, marking a significant addition to the educational offerings in the region.
The program is designed to intertwine technology and creativity, steering students to the forefront of digital communications. It emphasizes the growing influence of the internet and smart devices, preparing participants with advanced skills in visual design, communication, and user experiences. This initiative caters to the demands of digital products and interfaces, including mobile applications, immersive digital environments, and the exploration of augmented and virtual realities.

Associate Professor and undergraduate program director, Jason Arena, highlighted the curriculum's blend of practical skills and theoretical knowledge. The initial years focus on practical skills and an introduction to theory, while the latter years delve deeper into theory applied through innovative applications. Arena elucidated, "This major is for students who are fascinated by visual design, user experience design, interactivity, motion graphics, and technology." He further detailed the practical skills covered, such as mobile and tablet interface design, website development, and 3D modeling.
The degree is not just about classroom learning but also about real-world application. Through RIT Dubai's Cooperative Education program, students will gain hands-on industry experience, which is integral to their education. This approach not only enhances learning but also prepares students for the job market.
Arena also shared insights on the career prospects for graduates, pointing out the high demand for roles such as interactive user experience designers and motion graphics designers. Graduates from RIT's program in the USA have secured positions in leading companies, including Pinterest, Google Creative Labs, and Microsoft. With the launch of this program in Dubai, graduates are expected to attract similar attention from top firms in the region.
The program allows students the flexibility to undertake their studies in the UAE while earning an American degree, or to spend a period of study abroad at RIT's global campuses. This global perspective is a key component of the educational experience at RIT Dubai.
Dr. Yousef Al Assaf, President of RIT Dubai, expressed his enthusiasm for the program's launch, emphasizing its role in supporting the UAE's digital economy growth. "This is an important milestone for RIT Dubai as we broaden our portfolio with this pioneering program that will equip students with the skills to design and innovate the future of digital communication," he stated.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in New Media Design is now open for enquiries, with the program set to commence this Fall semester. This new degree program underscores RIT Dubai's commitment to providing cutting-edge education that aligns with the demands of the digital era, promising a bright future for its graduates in the digital communications sector.
