UAE: Sheikh Khaled Bin Mohamed Opens IIT Delhi's First International Campus In Abu Dhabi

His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, attended the inauguration of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi Abu Dhabi (IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi). This marks the first international campus of IIT-Delhi, a premier STEM education and research institution in India.

During his visit, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed toured the campus and reviewed its diverse academic programmes and facilities. These include Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programmes in Energy Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering, designed to equip undergraduates with skills to tackle energy challenges and shape the digital future.

The launch also saw strategic partnerships between IIT-Delhi Abu Dhabi, its home campus IIT-Delhi, and several prestigious higher education institutions in Abu Dhabi. These include Khalifa University, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, and Zayed University.

IIT Delhi Abu Dhabi will collaborate with Khalifa University on research and academic programmes. This includes sharing research facilities, lab spaces, and facilitating student and faculty exchanges. The partnership aims to enhance both institutions' research capabilities.

The collaboration with Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi will involve joint research projects, postgraduate student exchanges, and organising seminars and scientific meetings. This partnership aims to foster academic cooperation between the two institutions.

Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence will engage in joint research through seed project grants allocated by both institutions. They will also collaborate on joint teaching initiatives, short training programmes, and internship opportunities for students.

Zayed University's partnership will include exchange programmes for faculty and students. They will also collaborate on education and research projects, co-supervise graduation research, and host academic events such as conferences, seminars, competitions, and workshops.

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed highlighted the institution's pivotal role in realising leadership’s vision of fostering a diverse global hub for education. He emphasised its importance in supporting Abu Dhabi’s efforts to address climate change and produce future sustainability leaders.

Leadership's Vision

He added that the institute's opening reflects the UAE’s advanced education ecosystem's competitiveness. It advances Abu Dhabi’s position as a global hub in R&D while facilitating continuous upskilling of national talent in key sectors.

The agreement to establish IIT-Delhi's Abu Dhabi campus was witnessed by President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, in July 2023. This partnership complements the ongoing UAE-India Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA).

This collaboration reflects both nations' shared vision to prioritise educational excellence, innovation, knowledge exchange, and investment in human capital as foundations for future prosperity. It aims to enable long-term economic growth and sustainable development.

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed was accompanied by several dignitaries during his visit. These included Dr Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber; Shamma Al Mazrui; Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemy; Sara Musallam; Mubarak Hamad Al Mheiri; Rima Al Mokarrab Al Muhairi; Sunjay Sudhir; Professor Rangan Banerjee; and Professor Shantanu Roy.
