KAUST And Oil Sustainability Program Establish Strategic Agreements To Enhance National Sustainability Efforts

King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) and the Oil Sustainability Program (OSP) have entered into two strategic agreements. These agreements aim to enhance national sustainability capabilities and improve hydrocarbon use across key sectors through scientific assessments. The collaboration focuses on developing solutions that align with Saudi Vision 2030 and the Saudi Green Initiative.

The first agreement involves comprehensive sustainability evaluations using life-cycle assessment (LCA) and life-cycle cost (LCC) modeling for seawater concrete technology under the NovusCrete Consortium. This innovative method uses saline water to boost resource efficiency in infrastructure projects. KAUST and OSP will compare the environmental and economic performance of seawater concrete with traditional materials, offering scientific data to support sustainable construction decisions.

KAUST and OSP Sign Key Sustainability Agreements

The second agreement seeks to integrate sustainability more deeply within OSP by creating broader methodologies. These methodologies will evaluate environmental, economic, and social impacts, enhance data quality, and standardize assessment frameworks. This initiative aims to prepare for future projects while aligning efforts with national sustainability goals.

Coinciding with these agreements, KAUST hosted an international workshop that brought together global experts, policymakers, and industry leaders. The event focused on promoting LCA as a fundamental tool for sustainable development in Saudi Arabia. Discussions emphasized LCAs and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) as vital tools for enhancing global competitiveness, increasing supply chain transparency, and enabling evidence-based decision-making.

The workshop marked a significant step in building national capacity and harmonizing sustainability practices. It helps Saudi organizations meet rising global expectations in sustainability reporting. The event also highlights KAUST’s role as a crucial partner in advancing environmental data systems based on life-cycle methodologies.

This collaboration supports Saudi Vision 2030 objectives by fostering a transition toward a low-emission circular economy. By focusing on rigorous scientific assessments, these agreements aim to strengthen national capabilities in sustainability initiatives related to hydrocarbon use across various sectors.
