Heriot-Watt University Partners With MBZUAI To Foster AI And Robotics Innovation In The UAE

Heriot-Watt University has partnered with Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) to launch a pioneering Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This ambitious initiative aims to foster a new generation of doctoral students, equipped with the skills and knowledge to advance the field of AI and robotics. The collaboration marks a significant step towards achieving the objectives outlined in the UAE's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031.

The new CDT is poised to support up to 60 doctoral students simultaneously, providing them with unparalleled access to resources, faculty, and facilities across both Heriot-Watt University and MBZUAI. With campuses in Dubai and Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt University brings its renowned Scottish expertise in robotics to the partnership, while MBZUAI contributes its world-leading capabilities in AI. This synergy aims to cultivate a robust intellectual property landscape and build substantial capabilities within the UAE, aligning closely with the nation’s strategic vision for AI leadership globally by 2031.

Innovative Programme Structure

The doctoral programme, stretching over four years, integrates taught courses and an industrial placement in its first year, complemented by annual conferences and workshops held in both the UAE and Scotland. This structure is designed not only to provide a comprehensive educational experience but also to foster a deep connection between academic learning and practical application in the industry.

A Collaboration of Esteemed Institutions

Speaking on the partnership, Prof. Dame Heather McGregor, Provost and Vice Principal of Heriot-Watt University Dubai, highlighted the university's history of excellence in robotics education and research, embodied by the National Robotarium. The collaboration with MBZUAI is set to advance the UAE's position as a leading hub for AI technologies, in line with the nation's AI strategy.

Prof. Gillian Murray, Deputy Principal of Business and Enterprise at Heriot-Watt University, shared insights into the university's expertise in managing CDTs, drawing on previous successful collaborations, such as with the University of Edinburgh in Robotics and Autonomous Systems. These initiatives have graduated approximately 140 PhD students, underscoring the potential of the new CDT to contribute significantly to the development of tech skills, industrial awareness, and a future-ready workforce.
