Ex Google Senior Director Takes The Helm of AI's Future At MBZUAI

The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) has announced Professor Elizabeth Churchill, a distinguished user experience (UX) expert, as the new Department Chair of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). With a career that bridges both academia and the tech industry, Professor Churchill's appointment marks a significant milestone for MBZUAI, emphasizing its dedication to expanding and enhancing its academic offerings in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

Professor Churchill's recent accolades include the prestigious Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) SIGCHI Lifetime Practice Award, demonstrating her profound impact on the HCI community. Her role at MBZUAI will involve leading the newly established HCI department, further enriching the university's academic landscape which recently saw the addition of computer science and robotics departments.

Churchill Boosts HCI at MBZUAI

Her background includes a pivotal position as Senior Director of UX at Google, where her leadership was instrumental in the development of Fuchsia, a next-generation operating system. Her extensive experience also spans roles at eBay, Yahoo, and PARC (Palo Alto Research Center), highlighting her contributions to the field of HCI through both innovative research and practical applications.

With academic credentials including a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science from the University of Cambridge, Professor Churchill's scholarly contributions are extensive, with over 200 articles, five co-edited books, and two co-authored books. Her work is further solidified by her involvement in more than 50 patents, showcasing a commitment to advancing HCI and AI technology.

MBZUAI President and University Professor, Eric Xing, praised Professor Churchill's appointment as a testament to the university's ambition to become a leader in AI education and research. Xing highlighted her role in enhancing MBZUAI's academic programs and its mission to foster interdisciplinary collaboration in AI.

The global HCI market and academic programs are currently led by North American institutions, with leading programs at Carnegie Mellon University, University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, and University of Washington – Seattle. MBZUAI aims to position itself among these prominent institutions by developing postgraduate programs that not only offer advanced education but also a strong research component. This initiative is part of the UAE's broader strategy to drive innovation and supply the local industry with highly skilled talent in AI and related fields.

Professor Churchill expressed her enthusiasm for her new role, viewing it as a critical opportunity to merge human-centred design with the latest in AI technology. Her vision includes creating a dynamic community of HCI scholars and practitioners at MBZUAI, dedicated to leveraging AI for societal benefit.
