Dubai Teen’s Free Swim Channel Is Inspiring A New Generation Of Swimmers

In the city of ambitious skyscrapers and edge-cutting innovation, 17-year-old Dubai student Mihir Ramchandani is diving into his own brand of creativity this time in the pool. Having been a competitive swimmer since age 10, Mihir took his passion for the sport one step further out of the water with the creation of a free online swim training platform to help those who don't have access to proper coaching. His mission? Democratizing swimming take a sport from elite circles and make it a life skill for all.

A student at Jumeirah College, and an avid member of Hamilton Aquatics Dubai, Mihir has competed in several prestigious events like the Middle East Open Junior Championships, the Indian Nationals, and the Irish Open Summer Nationals. But Mihir doesn't view swimming as just a competitive sport. "I truly believe that swimming is more than just a sport," he says. "It's a life skill, like running or riding a bicycle.

He began his journey by saying thanks for the facilities he had here in Dubai, accessing the best coaches and facilities to train regularly and excel. "This is my way of being thankful for what the sport has taught me," he says. That got him to thank, which became the seed for his project: a not-for-profit online swimming lesson platform with the purpose of teaching quality swimming techniques to people who may otherwise never get the opportunity.

Swimming Lessons Go Digital

After two years of hard work, Mihir started a free online swimming tutorial channel on YouTube. His content is targeted toward learners who have no access to paid swimming lessons or experienced coaches. Though several tutorials exist online, few of them are high quality and free, and his platform tries to fill this gap.

The initiative extends beyond teaching; it is an effort to motivate viewers to take up swimming as a sport and a life skill. Mihir operates his channel targeting communities that have very limited access to swimming and teaching them refining techniques and gaining confidence in water.

His efforts soon caught the attention of AAS Vidyalaya-India's first e-school, which aims to impart quality education to children for whom going to school or college is not possible due to various reasons. AAS Vidyalaya means "hope" in Hindi, something quite befitting of Mihir's endeavour of tearing down barriers to accessibility. When 80 million children cannot attend school due to socioeconomic or infrastructure challenges in India, AAS Vidyalaya brings it to the screen and with Mihir, swimming lessons too.

This partnership has proved to be a game-changer. Over 50,000 students have accessed Mihir's swimming tutorials through the AAS Vidyalaya platform. Vikas Kakwani, the founder of the online school, termed Mihir's effort inspiring students from all walks of life to pursue their passion. "His efforts in creating quality content and empowering students through sports are commendable," Kakwani said.

His sister, too, has been inspired by Mihir's commitment to the sport. Indeed, taking a cue from her brother, she plunged into swimming at a tender age, making the crusade of Mihir very personal. Together, they epitomize the belief that sports are a great way of building not only individual character but also family bonding and shared values.

In a world where sports participation is usually stymied by issues of access, Mihir's platform is like fresh air. By creating professional-grade tutorials and distributing them for free, he's evening out the playing field for swimmers all over the world. Be it the first-timers dipping their toes into the water or the ones refining their strokes, Mihir's videos make the art of swimming approachable, accessible, and inspiring.

For Mihir, though, the rewards go way beyond views or accolades. "Seeing the impact of this project-knowing that someone, somewhere has learned to swim because of this is the ultimate fulfilment," he shares. His work reminds us that great impactful works start small and are born out of a simple idea and loads of heart.

While Mihir's effort has already reached and touched several thousand people, his vision doesn't stop here. He is confident that with time and growth at the YouTube channel, he could reach out further and continue this work with more organizations that feel similarly about making sports inclusive. Advanced swimming techniques and fitness tips, he dreams, will be part of the tutorials to cater to swimmers of all levels.

As Dubai continues to foster a new generation of change-makers, Mihir's effort tends to shine as a bright example of how passion can create far-reaching ripples beyond the realm of personal achievement. From competitive swimmer to educator, his journey proves that even in the digital age, community and connection will forever reign supreme.

Be it racing in the most competitive lanes or just learning to float for the first time, the message is simple from Mihir: to get started with swimming, if not life itself, all one needs is the right equipment and a bit of resolve.
