Coursera Introduces GenAI Tools To Combat Malpractices In Online Learning. A Look Into Their Advanced Tools

Coursera, a global online learning platform, has launched new GenAI-powered features to enhance the authenticity and verification of learning experiences. These tools aim to improve the value of online assessments, courses, and certificates by mitigating student misconduct risks.

Available on the Coursera for Campus platform and currently in pilot with select customers, these features include AI-Assisted Grading, Proctoring, a lockdown browser, and AI-based Viva Exams. These tools support assessment creation and grading while addressing AI-assisted fraudulent practices.

Coursera s New GenAI Integrity Tools

Studies show that 1 in 6 university students cheat in online exams, highlighting the need for robust academic integrity measures. Coursera's new GenAI tools aim to proactively address this challenge by fostering integrity and detecting academic malpractices.

"Online learning has become a powerful tool for institutions to better prepare students for a rapidly changing world. However, universities must ensure it meets the rigorous standards required for academic credit," said Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of Coursera. "While Generative AI introduces new risks for student misconduct, it also provides unprecedented opportunities for universities to enhance academic integrity at scale."

To strengthen academic integrity, tools such as Graded Item Locking require students to complete each lesson item before unlocking graded items. This promotes comprehensive learning and prevents skipping ahead. Coursera also controls exam attempts through Time and Attempt Limits to ensure fairness and discourage trial and error. Exam integrity is further maintained through Proctoring and a lockdown browser that blocks unauthorized resources during high-stakes exams.

Coursera is leveraging AI to tackle the challenges of assessment creation and grading at scale. The AI Assessment Generator saves educators' time by generating diverse math, text, and multiple-choice assessments tailored to courses. Question Banks and Variants offer a variety of questions for robust testing, making exams difficult to predict. Through AI-Assisted Grading, institutions can streamline grading by suggesting scores based on assignment analysis.

Enhancing the learning experience, Coursera Coach provides interactive learning assistance powered by GenAI. It offers lecture summaries, guided practice with spaced repetition, and tailored pre-assessment reviews. The AI-based Viva Exam tests authenticity in students' written submissions by enabling viva-style written exams where students 'show their work’ and graders receive detailed analysis.

Additionally, Coursera is enhancing peer feedback with AI-powered insights that evaluate text-based submissions using assignment rubrics. This helps generate grades more efficiently while maintaining high standards of evaluation.

To deter plagiarism, Coursera employs a Plagiarism Detection tool that instantly identifies content similar to previous submissions. This educates students on independent thinking and originality while preventing plagiarism.

These innovative features aim to create a more reliable online learning environment by ensuring academic integrity and enhancing the overall educational experience for students worldwide.
