BITS Pilani Dubai Campus Achieves Milestone With New Space Ground Station

BITS Pilani Dubai Campus (BPDC) has recently unveiled its latest addition, a state-of-the-art ground station designed for tracking amateur and educational satellites. This development marks a significant milestone in BPDC's commitment to advancing space technology education and providing students with practical, hands-on experience. The inauguration of this facility was highlighted by the successful reception of an image from the NOAA 19 satellite, showcasing the ground station's capability to capture essential weather data.

The ground station is equipped with two high-gain cross-polarised yagi antennas that operate in VHF and UHF bands, enabling real-time communication with satellites as they pass over the BPDC campus. This feature is crucial for educational and research purposes, allowing for precise monitoring and data collection.

New Space Ground Station at BITS Dubai

Dr Srinivasan Madapusi, Director of BPDC, expressed his enthusiasm about the launch, stating that the operational readiness of the ground station marks a significant advancement in BPDC's efforts to excel in space technology. He emphasized the importance of providing students with advanced resources and practical experience in satellite communication.

The ground station's ability to autonomously track satellite passes using digitally controlled rotors is among its standout features. This capability ensures accurate tracking and data collection from satellites, which is vital for both educational and research activities. Additionally, an omnidirectional antenna broadens the scope of research by enabling the reception of weather data from satellites like NOAA.

The ground station plays a crucial role in the ambitious MAHASAT project, mentored by Dr Mylswamy Annadurai, a renowned figure behind India’s successful Moon and Mars Missions. In collaboration with Edutech4Space, UAE's leading online space education hub, this project aims to position BPDC at the forefront of space exploration and education.

MAHASAT is designed as a multi-phase project aimed at revolutionizing space technology through incremental advancements. It began with the development and testing of a picosatellite using drones and has now reached a new milestone with the establishment of the ground station at BPDC. The project's trajectory will eventually lead to the construction and launch of an engineering model of a CubeSat, utilizing data collected and analyzed on-site.

Shrisudha Viswanathan, Founder and CEO of EduTech4Space, highlighted the significance of this development for both their organization and the student community in UAE. He pointed out that the ground station not only offers practical training in satellite communication but also opens up numerous research opportunities in space technology.

Dr Annadurai emphasized that the facility at BPDC facilitates practical research projects while offering interdisciplinary learning opportunities in fields such as meteorology and satellite communication. He praised BPDC's dedication to preparing the next generation of space scientists and engineers.
