This Oman University Study Shows AI Technology Can Enhance Student Academic Success

In a groundbreaking study from Oman's Al Buraimi University College (BUC), a team of researchers has made significant strides in employing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance student academic success. The study, led by Dr. Ijaz Muhammad Khan, an IT Instructor at BUC, and published in Smart Learning Environments (SLE), delves into the potential of AI to monitor student performance and implement preventive measures for academic challenges.

The research project, as reported by Times Of Oman, investigates the utilization of AI in tracking students' academic progress and proactively providing support to ensure their success. Dr. Khan highlighted the challenges teachers face in monitoring each student's performance and pointed out how AI technology could simplify this task by offering a more manageable approach.

Utilizing a comprehensive dataset from BUC, the team applied various AI machine learning classifiers to identify patterns in student performance. Among these, the 'Decision Trees' AI program stood out for its superiority in accuracy and efficiency, outperforming other models like k-Nearest Neighbours, Artificial Neural Networks, and Naive Bayes. This AI model proved exceptional in identifying students who could benefit from additional support, based on indicators such as class attendance, grades, and performance in major exams.

Dr. Khan's research underscores the importance of these indicators in predicting a student's need for assistance. With this predictive capability, teachers can offer timely help to students at risk of falling behind, enhancing the overall learning environment. The findings highlight the transformative potential of integrating AI technologies in education, aiming to improve learning outcomes and create a supportive atmosphere for students.
