NMDC Energy, Technip Energies, And JGC Secure $5.5 Billion ADNOC Contract For Ruwais LNG Project
NMDC Energy, in collaboration with Technip Energies and JGC Corporation, has secured a US$5.5 billion contract from ADNOC for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of the lower-carbon Ruwais LNG project. Located in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi, this project aims to establish two natural gas liquefaction trains with a combined LNG production capacity of 9.6 million tons per annum.
The Ruwais LNG plant will employ electric-driven motors instead of conventional gas turbines and will be powered by clean energy sources. This initiative positions the facility as the first LNG export plant in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to operate on clean power, making it one of the lowest-carbon intensity LNG plants globally.

The project is set to more than double ADNOC's LNG production capacity, aligning with the increasing global demand for natural gas and the ongoing shift towards decarbonisation. The use of nuclear energy for LNG production is expected to set a new international standard for low-emission energy solutions.
Ahmed Al Dhaheri, CEO of NMDC Energy, expressed pride in being entrusted with the Ruwais LNG project. He highlighted that this venture strengthens NMDC Energy's position in the UAE’s energy sector and underscores their commitment to advancing sustainable development in the country.
Arnaud Pieton, CEO of Technip Energies, remarked on the significance of powering electrified LNG trains with nuclear energy. He noted that this approach sets a new benchmark for energy security and sustainability. Pieton emphasized that leveraging their expertise in low-carbon and electrified LNG will support ADNOC’s role as a reliable global natural gas supplier committed to decarbonisation.
Farhan Mujib, Representative Director and President of JGC Corporation, affirmed their commitment to utilizing their capabilities and experience for the lower-carbon Ruwais LNG project. Mujib pointed out JGC's proven track record in the LNG field as a key factor in their involvement.
Technological Advancements
The Ruwais LNG plant's adoption of electric-driven motors powered by clean energy represents a significant technological advancement in the LNG sector. This approach not only reduces carbon emissions but also aligns with global efforts to transition towards more sustainable energy sources.
Strategic Importance
This project is strategically important for ADNOC as it enhances their LNG production capacity while adhering to environmental sustainability goals. The initiative reflects ADNOC's commitment to supporting global natural gas demand through innovative and eco-friendly solutions.
The lower-carbon Ruwais LNG project marks a significant milestone in the MENA region's energy landscape. By integrating advanced technologies and clean energy sources, it sets a new standard for sustainable LNG production. The collaboration between NMDC Energy, Technip Energies, and JGC Corporation underscores a shared commitment to advancing low-emission energy solutions on a global scale.
